What Kangal dogs are

Are they the same as Anatolian Shepherd Dogs? Do they really guard sheep and goats and children with a passion? Are they good pets? Do they eat a lot because they are nearly the size of lions? To find out the answers to these and many more questions click on the button below.

What Kangal dogs need

What food should Kangals be given and how much? What is the best way to rear them? If they need to look after goats or sheep should owners not interact with them but put them as puppies with the sheep and leave them alone? Do other dogs influence them? Do they need huge spaces to be happy so cant be kept in a house with a normal garden? For answers to these and other questions click on the button below.

How to train Kangals

Kangals are very different from other breeds of dogs. We have trained thousands of dogs and were amazed at just how different these dogs are. It is IMPORTANT to know these differences and how to communicate best with them. Whether you want your Kangal to guard your animals or just be your pet (guarding you) it is equally important. Click on the button below to find out how.

Kangal quirks: tell-tails

Kangals use their tales almost like elephants use their trunks to feel things close to them. They put them around other dogs like humans would put their arms around other's shoulders. In the photo above the 5 month puppies touch the tips of each others tails like people holding hands. Click the button below to see lots of tell-tails..

Is the Kangal the oldest dog breed?

The Babylonian clay plaque in the photo is about 2000 years old. It was found in Iraq (Old Mesopotamia). Today there are still dogs in the same region and in neighbouring Turkey that look identical. Is this the Kangal?

Are the  massive war dogs of 5000 years ago Kangals?

"We invite you to browse through our site to have a glimpse into this ancient and unique and almost 'un-doglike' breed."

As you can see if you look at our "about us" page, Julie and I are expert dog trainers from having trained thousands of dogs to rehome and we've bred the ultimate german shepherds - the big, healthy flat-backed Olderhills - for over 30 years. But when our Kangals entered our lives several years ago we had never met a dog breed anything like them and we fell head-over- heels in love with them. When they walk next to us it's like walking next to lions but with their thick fur and gentle natures they are like giant teddy bears! They communicate telepathically with our other dogs and with our goats and speak straight to our hearts. They have huge 'presences' and we rely on them heavily to protect us and our goats using their exceptional senses and tactical thinking and their exceptionally powerful bite should the need ever arise. We invite you to browse through our site and have a glimpse into this ancient and unique and almost un-doglike breed.
